Why your clip is too big for Discord
A minute of 1080p video from a phone or OBS is usually 50–150 MB. Discord’s free limit is 10 MB per file, so the video has to be re-encoded at a much lower bitrate. Doing that well means picking the right resolution: a 1080p picture squeezed into 10 MB turns into blocks, while 720p or 540p at the same size looks clean.
What CompressLab does
- Calculates the bitrate from the clip length so the file lands at 9.5 MB — safely under the limit.
- Chooses the resolution automatically if you set Resolution → Auto; otherwise it keeps your original resolution and only lowers the bitrate.
- Uses constant bitrate (CBR) with your graphics card’s encoder, so the size is predictable — it checks the result and re-encodes once if it overshoots.
Clip too long for 10 MB?
As a rough guide, 10 MB holds about 1 minute at 720p, or 2–3 minutes at 480p. For longer videos tick “If a video doesn’t fit — split it into parts”: you get several files under 10 MB each, named “part 1 of 3”, “part 2 of 3”…
Tips
- Gameplay with lots of motion needs more bits — trim the boring parts first (Advanced settings → Trim, split & name).
- Nitro Basic raises the limit to 50 MB and Nitro to 500 MB — set the slider to that size instead.
- Sound takes very little space; keep it on.
Discord upload limits in 2026
| Account | Max file size | Use this target |
|---|---|---|
| Free | 10 MB | 9.5 MB |
| Nitro Basic | 50 MB | 48 MB |
| Nitro | 500 MB | no compression needed for most clips |
Server boosts no longer raise the limit for everyone — the limit depends on the sender’s own plan. If you upload a bigger file, Discord shows “Your files are too powerful” and refuses it.
How long a clip fits in 10 MB?
File size is bitrate times length, so the longer the clip, the lower the quality per second. Rough guide at 9.5 MB:
- Up to 30 s: 1080p looks good, even for fast games.
- 30–60 s: 720p is the sweet spot; 1080p is fine for calm footage.
- 1–3 min: 480p–540p. Text in the game UI stays readable at 540p.
- Longer: split it into 10 MB parts, or trim to the best moment.
With Resolution set to “Auto”, CompressLab picks the step for you based on how many bits each pixel gets — the same rule professional encoders use.
Gaming clips: why they look worse than webcam video
Fast camera movement, particles and foliage change every pixel in every frame, which is the hardest thing to compress. For game clips at small sizes, dropping to 30 fps helps more than lowering resolution: half the frames means twice the bits for each one. Turn on Advanced settings → Video → Frame rate → 30.
Will it play in the chat?
Discord plays MP4 with H.264 video and AAC sound inline on desktop, web and mobile. That is exactly what this preset produces. MKV, AVI and HEVC files often show up as a download link instead of a player — another reason to convert before sending.
Questions
What is the Discord file size limit?
For free accounts it is 10 MB per file. Nitro Basic allows 50 MB and Nitro 500 MB.
How long can a video be to fit in 10 MB?
About a minute at 720p with sound, or 2–3 minutes at 480p. Longer clips can be split into several 10 MB parts automatically.
Will it lose quality?
Any compression to 10 MB loses some detail. CompressLab picks the resolution that looks best at that size, and you can preview 5 seconds before compressing.
Why does Discord say my file is too powerful?
It is over the limit for your plan: 10 MB on free accounts. Compress it to 9.5 MB here and it will upload.
Can I compress a 1-hour stream recording for Discord?
To 10 MB it would be unwatchable. Split it into parts or trim the highlight; Advanced settings → Trim, split & name lets you set the start and end.
