Two ways to split
- By size (this page’s default): each part is at most the size from the slider — e.g. 10 MB for Discord — at good quality. CompressLab works out how long each part can be.
- By length: Advanced settings → Trim, split & name → Split into parts → By length, then set the part length in seconds — for X (2:20), WhatsApp Status or a course platform.
Good to know
- Parts are re-encoded, so each one starts cleanly and plays on its own.
- Loudness normalization (if enabled) is measured once for the whole video, so all parts sound equally loud.
- Split and trim combine: trim off the start and end first, then split the rest.
Split by size or by length
- By size — each part is under the limit you set (for example 9.5 MB for Discord or 18 MB for email). Parts are as long as the size allows.
- By length — each part is the same duration, for example 60 seconds for stories or 15 minutes for upload sites with a duration limit.
Parts are cut on keyframes and named “video – part 1 of 4”, so they sort correctly and the recipient knows how many to expect. Sound is normalized once for the whole video, so the volume doesn’t jump between parts.
When splitting beats compressing harder
Compressing a 10-minute video to 10 MB means about 130 kbit/s for the picture — postage-stamp quality. Splitting it into eight 10 MB parts gives each part 1 Mbit/s: clear 720p. If the platform allows several files per message (Discord allows 10), splitting is the better trade.
Questions
How many parts will I get?
It depends on the length and the size limit. The list shows the number of files before you start, e.g. “3 files, ≈ 27 MB”.
Can I split without re-encoding?
Not in this tool — re-encoding makes every part start with a keyframe, so each one plays correctly on its own.
Will there be a gap between the parts?
No. Each part starts exactly where the previous one ended, on a keyframe.
