Three tools
- Clear-dialogue downmix. 5.1 → stereo with the centre (voices) louder and surrounds softer than the standard ITU downmix.
- Night mode. A compressor brings loud passages down (3:1 above the threshold, 10 ms attack, 300 ms release) and everything is then raised back, so quiet dialogue ends up louder relative to explosions. In our tests it narrowed the loudness range from 23 to about 14.5 LU.
- Equal loudness. Every episode is measured (ITU-R BS.1770 / EBU R128) and set to the same level (−18 LUFS, a good level for TV speakers) with a peak limiter — no more reaching for the remote between episodes.
Questions
Does my TV have this already?
Many have a “night mode” or “clear voice” setting that works on the TV’s own output. Cheaper TVs, projectors and boxes often don’t — and doing it in the file works everywhere.
